If you wish to check the front page of the largest newspapers in a given state in the United States you can easily do it over the internet -- without having to buy the newspapers -- by using the Newseum. A list of popular newspapers based on circulation is available at their website: http://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/main.asp.
Similarly, if you want to figure out the total number of newspaper in a state -- print newspapers -- you can find that information from Mondotimes, here are the big papers in New Jersey, ranking based on total circulation: http://www.mondotimes.com/newspapers/usa/newjersey-newspaper-circulation.html.
Why would you need these two pieces of information? I won't explain to you, but your answer should be in this Washington Post article: The ho-hum New Jersey Senate race, in 2 front pages.
